Hypnosis – Unraveling The Mysteries Behind It
Posted By on January 14, 2010
Hypnosis and its derivative, hypnotherapy, have been the subject of several misconceptions created by layman’s imagination. Some consider them to be some type of spell while others refuse to even acknowledge them. Some of the popular myths associated with hypnosis and the reality behind them are given below.
Hypnosis has no connection with any sort of dark arts. It is a very easy technique, which can be explained without much difficulty with the help of psychology and other scientific procedures. Even people who have seen hypnosis on others usually refuse to believe in it. They argue that those who can be hypnotized are mentally not strong enough. But nothing could be farther from the truth. Even mentally strong people can fall under the spell of an expert hypnosis practitioner.
Another notion about hypnosis that people have invented arbitrarily is that it is an altered state of consciousness. A hypnotized individual is totally conscious of his surroundings. During the hypnotic state, the subject calms down completely and is hence able to focus fully on the inputs provided by the practitioner.
Another myth, which has been propagated by some researchers, claims that hypnosis can work on merely 5% of the human population. Researchers have come up with this low result because they have made use of the identical hypnosis technique on all people without focusing on their individual traits. One hypnosis technique for all is not a viable solution as different individuals come under different personality types, and hence respond to different methods.
Many people consider hypnosis to be a form of meditation. But while hypnosis is a communication technique, meditation is all about a mental state and normally has no communication involved in the process. Trance too has no connection with hypnosis at all. The individual doesn’t communicate to achieve a state of trance, on the other hand hypnosis is not possible without communication.
A majority of people believe that it is impossible to bring about changes in one’s appearance and conduct through hypnosis training or hypnotherapy. Hypnosis obviously cannot attain something that is unnatural to the body. But it can bring about an improvement in physical health by altering behavioural patterns like overeating and constant smoking by raising motivation levels in an individual.
Hypnosis, and specifically hypnotherapy, can have a significant role to play in the overall welfare of an individual, and not trying them out just because of some misconceptions is a missed opportunity.
